Troubleshooting Nordhavns at sea!
By James Knight
Most of my Nordhavn customers know how busy I get. Some
days I get over 100 phone calls and numerous calls from folks at sea with problems. How can I better help you? Well, I have
some ideas that I would like to share and some examples of what to look out for and how to troubleshoot problems when they
arrise.
In my humble opinion, if you own
a Nordhavn, you should keep reading! It always amazes me how little some owners know about their complex vessels. With just
a little more knowledge of your systems and electrical distribution, you will cruise more safely and with confidence.
If you are one of the many owners that tell me their
electrical knowledge is limited, then you are at a major disadvantage. Don’t feel alone, I would say that 95% of owners
I talk to are not comfortable wielding a multi meter. 75% of the problem calls I get, involve picking up that multimeter and
it would be a big help if you were already familiar with the on button and some basic electrical skills.
Over the next few months I'm going to keep working on this page and adding
links to different problems that I have come across in the past, in the hope that you can understand the importance of some
basic troubleshooting skills that may save your boat and possibly your life.
Below is a link to a Nordhavn 76 problem that I came across a couple of days ago. This is about as
serious as it gets when it comes to loose connections and I would suggest you all read this and understand the importance
of basic electrical trouble shooting and understanding your systems and drawings.
